Self-Care is IMPORTANT!

I’m too afraid of being labelled ‘selfish’ so I stay ‘selfless’ to make everyone else happy, my inability to say “No, I can’t do this for you because I’m already overwhelmed and busy” is going to lead to a few mini mental breakdowns for September; I’ve already had 2 this week and sense if I don’t set some boundaries there will be more.

I find it extremely difficult to tell friends and family ‘no’ even when I’m drowning in work and my own problems. My body has started to give me signs that it is overworked and exhausted thus I’ve decided to take the weekend for myself to do all the things I like: writing poetry, watching YouTube videos, and reading romance novels.

I’M TAKING A BREAK; I’ve already started and I’m enjoying it so far. My advice is to take time for yourself, take a day or a few days or however long you can, do all the things that bring you joy and peace during that time. Allow yourself to relax and focus solely on you for that day. Take a break from being selfless because self-care is IMPORTANT! I’m sorry that this week’s blog post is a short read, have a good weekend everyone!

This Week’s Recommendation

Book Recommendation: Words on Bathroom Walls by Julia Walton, this is my second male pov YA novel and I’m starting to like male narrations after years of reading female ones. The book follows Adam Petrazelli, a teenage who has been recently diagnosed with schizophrenia, let me first say I really like how Julia Walton portrays this specific mental illness because in the past schizophrenia has always been depicted as the ‘crazy illness that makes you think the government is watching you’ or at least from all the series and movies I’ve watched. It was REFRESHING to read about a character that’s just like you and me who just happens to have a mental illness. Adam has to switch schools after experiencing his first episode during a chemistry class, he’s now attending a Catholic high school – I know what you are thinking so snicker away – and this is where he meets Maya and befriends Dwight or rather Dwight befriends him. The book has the boy-meets-girl romance covered but it was the genuine friendship with Dwight and stepfather-stepson relationship between the main character and Paul that really made me cry, I could write an essay on why I love this book but I’ll just keep it brief. I don’t want to give away too much but Adam is testing out a new drug that his mom is hoping will work, he’s also in therapy and honestly, his method of communicating with his therapist is the wittiest parts of the book. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK! It is very important that we talk about mental health and illnesses because the more we know the less ignorant we are. Also, the movie is in selected cinemas – I think – so check that out too and let me know if you like it.

Music Recommendations: Russ & Kehlani ‘Take You Back’, this is a musical collaboration I didn’t know I needed in my life and I’m sure you’re going to like it. The vocals are amazing, and the song is less than 3 minutes so it’s short and sweet.
SZA feat Ty Dolla $ign ‘Hit Different’, it’s been a while since SZA dropped new music and I must say this song didn’t disappoint for me, she still can have me in my feelings about an old relationship and this is why I love her so much; her music affects you emotionally. Ty is good for vocals and choruses as always, he’s on a lot of features for this specific reason. Go check out the video, the choreography is fireeeeeee!
